Coastal Georgia Comprehensive Center

The goal of this project was to renovate an existing school with a specific scope of work awarded under a grant. The school’s population is children 4-20 years old, with varying degrees of developmental and behavioral disabilities.

I was responsible for researching the needs of this special population, complying with educational and accesibility codes, creating the design, drafting and writing the construction documentation, contributing to the project manual, and interfacing with client, vendors, and bidders.

The living center is designed to feel like a residence. Here the students learn how become more independent by learning how to use a kitchen, socializing in the lounge area, or setting the dining table for a meal. All circulation meets or exceeds ADA requirements. The kitchen is designed for universal accessibility.

The use of cheerful patterns and cool-toned bright colors was chosen to provide psychological support, a decision based on behavioral research.

Budget: $400,000
